I couldn't agree less. In fact I could take that entire post and swap Doom and Deus Ex and it'd represent how I feel. Deus Ex was fantastic when it came out, it's almost completely unplayable by today's standards. Doom on the other hand does the same thing today it did then, it plays the same, and if it was released on a handheld or a phone now it wouldn't feel out of date at all.

This is the problem with lists like this and ratings. There's always going to be personal preference. I think the best we can do is agree on iconic, sometimes industry changing, titles that we all agree should be played, regardless of any rating system.

I also think the original post should be edited with the actual list, otherwise this thread is soon going to be very long and tricky to navigate to find the classics.

One more question.

A game could have crappy SP, but amazing MP. How do we handle that? Today playing MP in some of the old games is pretty much impossible.

As for Doom Im gonna load it up again in a week or so to see if it stills plays well.

JayRoe:
That's a good point. Quake was amazing in MP and I dedicated a year of my life to DM6.

Fixed.

You sellout bitch, Dungeon Keeper I deserves to be played more than DKII, DKI had a lot of bugs but Some guys have been working on something called 'KeeperFX' which changes a lot of shit to DKI one making it more stable and more balanced.
Unlike the unstable and almost-unrepairable DKII, fucking Peter.M! He ruined what Dungeon Keeper could have been!

For KeeperFX go here: http://www.keeperklan.com/forums/52-KeeperFX

Transport Tycoon, christ. That game. I daren't play it just for the fact that I'll get sucked into it for 5 hours straight.

I'm adding one to the list.

Turn based top down space trading and combat game/3D RTS/third person shooter/text adventure/arcade shooter
Space Rangers 2
Quite frankly you need to play this. It's one of the deepest most complex games ever created, it's all things to all men, all at once. It really is all those categories in one game, and it makes them work. Easily one of the most overlooked and under appreciated games ever made.
