FINAL FANTASY XIII
« on: March 29, 2010, 10:54:27 PM »
I have been playing this game for a while now and honestly It's really dissapointing me inmensely.
Not sure If I was expecting too much or if I'm just too used to the freedom Pc rpg titles offers , but this game is like riding on a monorail where you have to drive it forward by turning a wheel again and again and again...

I'm around 10 hours inn and honestly the game's visuals are great, but the game feels so darn restrictive and the character system is so fucking Linear that the game loses down bigtime due to that.

I Normally don't give out a score on games early on, but this game is definitely shaping up for a 5 / 10 for me, so I kinda should have waited to pick it up from the bargains bins instead of buying it on release out of hype.

All the reviews/comments before the release pointed out that it was very linear for the first 20-30 hours.

Yeah, I know the promised land is way ahead, but honestly getting there is turning out to be a bad experience.
A game should be enjoyable straight on , things like having to walk up to a saving point is retarded and is something that should have died in 1999 , also combat seems to be in some cases ultra fast while in other cases it's ultra slow due to stupid team member AI (not using the right spell combo vs monster).

Things I'm not fond of inn this game :

*Music : Seems pretty ok at first but way to repetetive in the lenght.
*Level system : Again monorail experience. There's just not enough customization inn here and its more about just grinding and filling up the different crystals.
*Armor / appearance : For me having a nice outfit that changes throughout the game is cool, put on some sexy chain armor or some ghotic techno plate for the ultimate outfit , but so far the only thing that is changing are the weapons. So kinda downer there.

Picked this up last week and played for a couple of hours and so far it's meh for me. I've played through all the other FF's on the ps1/ps2/ and so far imho it's the weakest of them all, of course not counting the trash that was FFX2.

Sub-par voice acting along with cheesy dialouge and combined with the (as stated above) monorail leveling system, it's just not doing it for me. I think i'll try to log a few more hours and see if it gets any better.

i'm 30 hours in and well unlike everybody else i like the game.. i mean yeah it's not the game of the year for sure but it's still enjoyable.. also, yeah all the game is on track.. even the part where you're free to roam out is not that big and when you'Re done with it you have to continue on another track to keep going.. but there's some things you can do before continuing...

This game probably sets a new standard inn what a Lineal game is, most of the game is basically just walking forwards non stop with a few sidestep to pick up goodies and such.

The really Bads :

*No optional dungeons, or places where you have to pick your brains a little. Basically not much thinking in this game.

*Focus, falcie, focus, falcie, focus, lcie, lcie, focus, lcie, focus focus. That's all what the conversation is about, you never really get to feel attached to any of the characters and their EMO trips are way overplayed and darn old by todays standards. It's very hard to get emotionally attached to a bunch of emo teenagers who rage trips the whole time and has the retard behavior they have.

*Gran Pulse : Yeah, finally you get somewhere else than Coccoon, but hell, it's more of the same walking over and over again, and honestly you don't really get to hear something interesting about what happened on Gran Pulse that left the world so devastated and lifeless humanoid wise. Just tidbits from Vanille and Fang , nothing really to explain how the people rebelled against cocoon etc.

*Combat system : To be the part thats supposedly shines, it's darn slow and repetitive in unlocking new abilities or options to fight with. Jumping through paradigms wears off quite fast and its basically just a shift of roles to either heal, buff or debuff your enemies linked togheter with damage and chain increasing combos. Basically you want to do the most damage the fastest way possible to your enemy and theres not much strategy there really.
Either way you are basically mostly using autocombat for 95% of the fights anyway.
