Is registering your purchased software a bad idea?
« on: September 22, 2010, 03:18:21 PM »
I'm posting this in the games section because games are virtually the only kind of software we ever buy.

Anyway, I was reading this article about how you don't own the software you buy and thus can't resell it. But if you haven't registered the game, you'll be able to resell it and the next owner can register it instead, right?

Seems logical. In a twisted sort of way.

Registering your games is only problematic if it is required to unlock the game and ties it down to an online account, effectively preventing anyone else from registering it.

The only games I have ever bothered registering are those which are required to be registered, e.g. steam works games, starcraft 2, bad company 2, battlefield 2, etc.

As long as registration does not prevent the next buyer from playing the game, then I do not see what the issue is.

Quite frankly, publishers and developers who say they are only licensing software can go fuck themselves. As far as I am concerned, I am paying for the final code they have produced and stamped onto a disc, not some bullshit license or service they have rationalized out of thin air to justify screwing over consumers.

Since I seldom sell my purchased games (Pc ones that is) I usually do register the games, but to my knowledge that has been mostly wasted time since you do not get anything back for doing that (and the company does get your DATA ).

Will probably never register a game unless i have to from now on.
