Square Enix Anticipating The Death of Consoles
« on: December 16, 2009, 05:55:58 PM »
Square Enix may be notorious for looking back when developing games, but when it comes to the strategy of big business, they're looking as far forward as the human eye can see.

"In ten years' time a lot of what we call ‘console games' won't exist", Square Enix boss Yoichi "Imperial Hot" Wada told MCV in an interview.

"In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network. A time will come when the hardware isn't even needed anymore."

"With that, any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform on which games can be played – that's exponential growth in the potential of gaming. The potential size of the market is enormous."

So, while you may think FFXIII is the bees knees, Square are probably more interested about the performance of FFXIV.

Square Enix: Platform Holder Not Surprised By Death of Consoles
« Reply #1 on: December 16, 2009, 05:56:32 PM »
Square Enix honcho Yoichi Wada looks into his crystallis ball and sees a future in which consoles are simply not necessary, reiterating, what he said in November.

"But let's say in ten years time what we traditionally call 'console games' simply won't exist," Wada told Develop. "The exact timing at which it will go away is hard to determine, but somewhere around 2005 the console manufacturers' strategy shifted."

In the past, he continues, the platform was hardware, but now it is network. "So a time will come when the hardware isn't even needed any more."

But won't this hurt game companies and platform holders? "First of all the distributors and sales firms will see a big negative impact," said Wada. "But as I say the format holders knew that this shift was coming."

Square Enix is currently branching out to focus on PC browser games, which Wada sees as potentially big market especially in Asia.

How bitter sweet. As much as I hate consoles, I hate the browser based gaming concept just as much.

So to summarise, their contract deal with Sony ended and they have enough money to not be Sony's bitch ever again. Kay.

Is he referring to that real-time game streaming technology? Can't recall the name right now, but you probably know what I mean.
Hardware will still be required because for that to work, you'll still need a very fast internet connection.

currently the browser game market is even larger than console gaming. So i'm not surprised the industry makes such a claim.

So now we can look forward to games going from being "consolized" to "browserized"?

Excellent.

Hah. Then what happens after all those browser games?

Computerized Games?

Like fuck that'll ever happen.

Have you considered what browserized gaming entails?

If you asked people ten years ago if they'd ever watch a movie in a browser, they'd all say no, cause that meant tiny, blocky videos. Now watching a movie in a browser can be a true HD fullscreen experience. There's a very big difference between what you associate with browser games and what they actually intend to pull off.

More comic styled games for browsers would be very awesome and would give many more artists jobs.

DC Comics or Marvel could get very far in it and reinvent themselves.

But with browserized games probably means subscriptions to sites in order to play/access them and so on so I guess piracy in that area would be screwed over, for a while.

Although there are a lot of browserized MMO games at the moment.

this prediction is dumb. you need a huge fast pipe to get full graphics, and you still have to deal with lag and so forth. what's the point?

sure, in 10 years time you might have the capability.
but you also have the capability to just play the game off the local hard drive, since processors will be that much faster, and hard drives that much bigger. why use cloud gaming when you can just download and cache a local copy?? why stream the game anew if the computer is fast enough?

and what happens if the connection goes out?
or you dont have a cable hookup to your tv because the internet is in the other room. and not everyone will connect ethernet to every room of your house, and wireless might still not be fast enough for 1080p gaming (and who wants all that radiation anyway)?

it's just overly idealistic to think that this will happen on such a scale as to replace stored local copies of games.

all your questions of 'why' are irrelevant isotope. the why is simple and also the only reason this technology is pushed at all: copy protection.
