I dunno. How much money they walk away with will likely depend largely on their legal fees and whatever fines they'll have to pay off.

I can see why people are mad at The Pirate Bay owners for selling out to The Man. There was a lot of talk about not selling out and now, well, they sold out. On the other hand, I can't blame the guys for not wanting to dump the whole thing and live on to fight another day.

But I know I'll be interested to see what final form The Pirate Bay takes over the next few months. If it does hit the shitter as many are predicting it will, there will be something else to take it's place as the grand-daddy of torrent sites soon enough.

Maybe so, but I never tried to convince anyone that when I'm downloading a DVDRip or a new mp3 album for free it isn't illegal and/or wrong.
Most asshole supporters of their "cause" justify their actions with arguments such as "they have enough money already" or "it's too expensive" or that they're somehow fighting back against some entity of some kind for the good of some nonexistent crap other than their own pockets.

These Swedes are feeding their followers this bullshit AND they're making money by channeling free access to the commercial works of others, so they are the lowest scum of all.

The only reason people are doing this is because they CAN. You can do this without repercussions and that's enough of an excuse for thoughtless people to stupid things and let this all spin out of control.
This is the Internet equivalent of a major city blackout with people looting the stores and complaining that the power is about to come back on.  I welcome it back.

It won't put a stop to rampant piracy but it will at least piss off some of these self righteous jerks.

So the mighty pirate bay finally went down. years of mocking lawyers finally caught up with them. i'm surprised they made it this far actually. piracy should never have been legitimized. it's stealing, not a full functioning demo; it is breaking the law and not giving a shit. if you have a problem with it go buy your software.

As for the whole stealing aspect. If I write an application and people warez it, I'm only going to lose money on account of those who would have otherwise bought it. The rest don't matter.

It would be great if all software was free or dirt cheap. You could bring your own dvds to the store and burn a few copies of whatever you want. But that's not realistic. No one is going to spend millions of dollars in development to give it away. You're talking about a developer getting stolen from with little to no over-head. What about the OS that software runs on? Or the video game with professional voice acting? That stuff isn't cheap or easy to make.

I'm not posting because I want to turn anyone away from piracy. I don't care if you pirate everything you have. Just don't lie to yourself to feel better about it. It bugs me because it's intentional ignorance. If you thought about it you'd know that the "if I wasn't going to buy it anyway it's not stealing" argument doesn't always work. Sure for most of the crap you probably wouldn't have bought it. But if there was no alternative to buying your software, you would pay for some of it. And if you do pay for some of it you would probably have paid for more of it. On this topic both sides are wrong in their view. Not all piracy results in loss of revenue, but some of it does. And yes, piracy is stealing. It may be a copy with your own bandwidth and media but it's still their data. If someone copies your hard drive with their own media and takes all your personal info, wouldn't you call that stealing? Wouldn't you call it stealing even if you intended to sell it to them?
