I smell this game going f2p very soon.
http://www.pcgamesn.com/rift/rift-go-free-play-june-12thI guess the subscription model really is dead. Only EVE is left, as far as I know. Rift is one of the better games in wow-style mmo market, but it still has the same problem as the rest of them: It's too much like wow: most mmo gamers have played wow, it's really hard to keep interest up on this game after a while. I liked it, but after a while I just did the same thing as I did in wow before I quit: stood in a capital city, chatted with my buddies and lazily did some instances and battlegrounds. My problem with wow was that after they grouped the battlegrounds, added flying mounts and instance finder, you never need to go anywhere in the game world or talk to anybody. The game world is just a glorified lobby for instance running. That ruined the game for me, and was the major reason why I got bored with it and quit. It's really sad that you see all those areas once, when you're leveling your character. After that, you've no reason to ever go in those zones. Rift was just the same. They copied all those things that are supposed to make the game more enjoyable to play when you don't need to talk to idiots and can instantly find groups and teleport everywhere. I liked the mechanics of both wow and rift, but really, they don't feel much like MMOs when all you need to is sit in a one city and instantly teleport to instanced repetitive pvp or pve with people you don't know or never talk to.

Tyson had pretty damn good defence too:
There's some amazing stuff on that video, like the part starting at 1:33 and the knockout at starting at 2:07. Damn shame they didn't have HD cameras everywhere back then like we do now.

Maybe a bit. Some areas were quite open, some others bit more linear. The story was absolutely kickass, characters were well written, and what you did in the game actually altered the story of the game in major way. last chapter for example was completely different storywise depending your choice in earlier chapter, etc. I thought it was one of the best story driven games ever. It's about the only RPG in recent years where I had actually to stop and think a bit before deciding few things.

Puki, why so? I mean, those are plans that will change for hundreds of times, but I think the game is already pretty damn impressive at the moment and I like it how they're planning to stick around with their long term plan. I don't think all the things in there will make in the game, but they've said since the start of the beta that they have long term plans for PS2.
If you mean that the game will die, I seriously doubt it. Player populations have been good, I'm having good time in the game and they're adding more stuff and fixing bugs at good pace. Pretty damn good for an mmo launch. I don't have numbers, but I'm guessing SOE makes good money out of the game. I see tons of guns & cosmetic upgrades around, and most of my friends are paying the subsription. My gut feeling tells me that they're all right - but of course we'll need to wait for a while to see if the game keeps growing or if it will shrink down like most big mmos that fail after the launch.

They just added sort of tutorial screens describing the most important stuff, which should help new players a bit. I'm still not completely happy about the shape of the game. I mean, everything works, all the major features are in the game, but they still could use some more time to bug fixing, game balancing, adding more certs and generally polishing the game. edit: just launched the game. looks like they also added getting started button to the launcher:
